A beautiful open back operculum pendant in brass and sterling silver on a sterling silver chain.

An operculum is the trapdoor-like foot of a sea snail. It keeps the snail safe and secure when it is inside its shell and prevents it from drying out inside during low tide.

Operculums are known around the world as ‘cat’s eyes’ or ‘shiva’s eye’  and the spiral pattern is said to represent eternity. It  is alleged to symbolise creation, spiritual knowledge and transformation and being able to open the ‘Third Eye Chakra’.

This operculum is specifically fantastic as it has been collected from a South African beach and comes from the South African Turban snail (Turbo sarmaticus).

(most other shiva’s eye shells come from the Pacific Ocean)

I have kept the back of the pendant open so that it exposes the rough beautiful back of the operculum.

NOTE: this is an untreated and unsealed shell, please handle with care.
