Originating in the 17th century, spoon jewellery began as an affordable way for staff in Victorian England to create engagement or wedding rings.

Spoon jewellery was seen as a symbol of anti-establishment values because it allowed people, especially those without wealth, to create meaningful items outside the traditional class-driven systems that dictated luxury and status.

It is often speculated that staff would steal cutlery from their employers in order to obtain such an item.

While the wealthy could afford gold and gemstone jewellery, staff and working-class individuals repurposed common household silver spoons into jewellery, subverting the idea that only the wealthy should wear rings and other accessories as symbols of love or commitment.

Today, I repurpose sterling silver antique spoons into rings, necklaces, and bracelets celebrating heritage and craftsmanship.

Many of the spoons I use would be destined for melting and sold as silver scrap. And so, using antique silver spoons not only reduces waste but preserves the intricate engravings and patina of the past, making each piece a wearable link to history.

Each ring or pendant, crafted with meaning, symbolises transformation and individuality.

I like to also believe that wearing spoon jewellery in a South African context allows the wearer to ‘stick it to the man’ and embrace the rebellious and anti-establishment values against a class system full of inequality which has been felt by so many for centuries.
